Family Cooking

To teach children about good nutrition at an early age, get them involved in the cooking process, from planning and preparation, to actual cooking.

GROWING children, especially preschoolers and school-age children, have receptive minds. They absorb new information and learn new skills easily. Therefore, this is the ideal time to start educating them about good nutrition and healthy eating habits.

Teaching our young ones about nutrition is not difficult. The best way to impart nutrition knowledge to your child is to get her to participate in the process of meal preparation, right from planning, to shopping and cooking.

Plan and discuss

Meal planning, be it on a weekly or daily basis, is the best way to provide healthy, wholesome meals for your child and your whole family. When you plan your meals, you know exactly what to buy and what to cook. Indirectly, it saves you money and time, as well as the stress of trying to figure out what to cook just 30 minutes before dinner time!

As you are planning a list of meals for the week, allow your child to contribute her ideas, eg what she likes to have for lunch or dinner, for the next few days.

As a parent, you could guide her in choosing the foods within your set boundaries, with these principles in mind:

> Aim to serve three main meals, and if needed, also allow for healthy snacks every day.

> Foods should be nutritious and come from all the food groups in the Malaysian Food Pyramid.
